Titchenal Family & Genealogical History Web Site (www.Titchenal.com)
We developed Titchenal.com to feature the genealogical research and work completed by the late O.R. Titchenal, as a personal tribute to his efforts to document our family history. The web site is a mash up of multiple viewing formats and technologies due to the age of the web site. In 1998 the Plain Dealer named Titchenal.com one of the best genealogical sites in Northeast Ohio, which demonstrates how long content can stay active on the Internet. Since that time the site has gone through many upgrades and conversions to keep current with changing web technologies, such as CCS and HTML5.
The challenge of this project was how to keep the original materials and documents written in old formats and update them without having to invest huge time requirements and costs to maintain the content and platform. In this case, we were able to keep the site as a mixture of older technology such as PDF pages and non-standard CCS html code with newer responsive design pages for indexing that look equally well on PCs, tablets and mobile devices.
This project shows the challenges and opportunities to continue to leverage older technology with upgraded interfaces to keep important historical content available. This web site includes a Facebook guest book, history time line, HTML5 drop down menus, digital books and heavy use of graphics to add interest to the web site. This site can be used as a template for persons interested in developing a family history web site with similar capabilities.
